What to do about my love for SALT?
I know that it’s horrible for my health, but I LOVE salt. I eat much more than a person should….to the point that sometimes I will just pop a salt packet in my mouth or eat a bit of Sea Salt from a grinder. It’s like an addiction for me….
Does anyone have suggestions (other than telling me to use Mrs.Dash) that can help me to reduce my desire to eat salt all the time?!
In addition to many of the things yash said, learn to salt your food (sparingly) only at the table rather than cooking with it (unless it will be on the surface of a food like on chicken or pork to be grilled, etc.). The salt used after cooking will lie right on the surface of a food so touch your tongue directly and you’ll get more bang for your buck.
And then try to use less and less salt over the weeks and months till you’ve reset your sensitivities to a better level.
Another good thing is to substitute other spices and some herbs for the salt, or use more of the spices with just a little salt.
If you can eat spicy things like hot peppers, hot sauces, etc., that will give you a nice strong taste which may not require salt at all (and those things are actually quite healthy). If you’re not a fan of hot, you can acclimate yourself a little at a time to where you can eat some of it. Black peppers are other strong spices btw.
Garlic and other “aromatics” will work the same way.
Also, try recipes for ethnic foods which don’t use a lot of salt, and try out their spices…. e.g. Indian, Middle Eastern, foods especially. Many of those are traditionally made ‘hot,” but if you’re cooking them yourself you can just lower the amount of chiles or other heat, or leave them out.
(Herbs can be fine too but I find them less of a real substitute for salt myself and/or there are a lot of them I don’t really like.)
P.S. If you’re actually eating salt from packets, you could have some kind of medical condition… I’d tell a doctor about that and get a blood test just to check if I were you.
