pulsed magnetic field by electromagnets?
hi friends
I am a biologist and i need to create a pulsed magnetic field of the following specifications
frequency:10hz-75hz
intensity:1-2 mT
pulse duration:1-10ms
i can vary the intensity by number of turns in the coil and i can control the pulse duration by 555 timer and relay, how can i ever set the frequency?
I Have More questions to answer too, please also post your mail id who are willing to help me, this project will have a huge impact on biotechnology
If you need any sort of precision and consistency, it might be better to just use a function generator/computer, have it trigger a transistor to power your coils. As a cheap hack, you can use the sound line output of a computer as a digital-analog converter, create a desired waveform in free software like Audacity, and have it trigger a FET (or BJT if you can provide the current) that powers your coils – could save a lot of hassle from dealing with timing circuits and such, especially if you don’t have a data acquisition system handy. Though the quality of your sound card might have a say in the quality of signal you produce… but you do get to generate arbitrary waveforms, not just simple square waves.
Also keep in mind that your coils will have an inductance (which increases with more loops), this may have some consequences for your application – but you’ll want high current and fewer loops to get lower inductance and equivalent fields. A lower inductance implies lower time constant, which is desirable, as a high time constant will prevent you from getting the fields you want at higher frequencies due to roll-off. This will depend on the geometry of your coils, and may not be an issue for you to begin with – just make sure you spec your coils correctly.
